Find a fairer way to pay for broadband

The plan to provide an “extensive broadband infrastructure” is, I am sure, laudable and would provide a nice service to those who would use it. There is, however, a serious flaw in the way the county commissioners propose to fund it.

Why is it that those who buy locally in our “brick and mortar” stores and pay local sales tax should shoulder the entire burden of paying for the financing of the system? On the other hand, those who buy goods on the internet and pay no local sales tax would pay nothing into the system on those purchases. Yet, they are the ones who would benefit most.

If the commissioners propose to pay for the system with sales taxes, they need to find a way for those who purchase thru the internet to pay their fair share of sales tax. Alternatively they should find another way to finance it.
