A hands-on field tour and free barbecue at the Southwestern Colorado Research Center in Yellow Jacket is planned for Thursday, Aug. 18 at 9 a.m.

The research center is an unusual place with one of the highest research orchards in the world growing peaches, apples, and other fruits as well as a variety of dryland and irrigated crops.

The hands-on experience gives participants a chance to ask the experts for help and allows participants to get their hands dirty in the soil pit. Participants will discuss soil characteristics and soil health, look at irrigation technology, discuss dryland and irrigated crops, and discuss pest management concepts at the orchard. The center will top off the day with a barbecue.

The research center is at 16898 Road Z, Yellow Jacket. For more information, email or call John Rizza at john.rizza@colostate.edu or 970-243-5068 x128 or Judy Garrigues at judy.garrigues@highdesertconservation.org and 970-565-9045 x118.
