Nearly 300 fans filed into the bleachers at Fairgrounds Speedway on Friday evening to watch drivers cut through the dirt track under the lights on a chase for the checkered flag.
Following the opening heats, there were main events in six different United State Racing Association divisions. And half of them were won by local drivers.
Tony Hill, of Cortez, won the B Modified division; John Kester, of Dolores, won the Sport Compact class and Race Fisher, of Dove Creek, took home the trophy in the Stock Car group.
Other winners included Zane Devilbliss, of Farmington, who claimed first place in the Modified class to stay atop the season’s point standings at Fairgrounds Speedway in the division; Jordan Eddleman, of Kirtland, won the Limited Mod group and Jason Duggins, of Farmington, won the Hobby Stock main event.
Racetrack promoter Kevin Faddis said that although he was pleased with the turnout, he expects the crowd for the next two races to be even greater.
There are six races left in the season, and the next two will be held during the Montezuma County Fair, with races on Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30 beginning around 8 p.m. Faddis also believes that the lawnmower races, held during intermission of the upcoming races, will be a big draw.
“The 30th should be a big night for us because that’s actually the first night of the fair,” said Faddis. “So there will be a lot going on. We’re expecting a pretty good turnout.”
