Letter writer got sales tax rate wrong

I am writing in response to Steve Sharp’s letter headlined “Sales tax not always charged correctly” (Journal, April 29.)

I want to help clarify our local tax rate for Journal readers that Sharp has now completely confused. He is correct that the state sales tax rate is 2.9 percent, and that the city of Cortez is 4.05 percent. However, the hospital district special tax is 0.40 percent. That totals 7.35 percent. (Rates are higher for business in the lodging industry) I hope that Sharp has not argued his theory to any area business that are charging the correct percentage.

A quick search on the Colorado Department of Revenue website, https://www.colorado.gov/revenueonline, could have saved him a lot of grief.
