Spending caps are a Medicare kill switch

Dear Editor:

Rep. Tipton has been out and about “explaining” his stand on “The Republican Effort to Destroy Medicare.” His explanations are disingenuous and downright mendacious. The fact is, Tipton and his Republican pals are threatening to hold the entire economy hostage in order to cut Medicare and preserve the Bush tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires (guess who makes all those unlimited campaign contributions?).

But after facing heated criticism at town halls recently, they’re changing their tactics. Now, instead of attacking Medicare head-on, they’re calling for spending caps to disguise their plan to gut Medicare.

Spending caps would actually trigger massive cuts to Medicare within a few years. Spending caps are nothing more than a Medicare kill switch.

The Republican plan, Tipton’s plan, is worse than bad policy. It is immoral. We can’t balance the budget on the backs of seniors and the poor. Programs that protect our parents and grandparents, like Medicare, should not be on the chopping block.

Make corporations flush with billions in profits pay their fair share of taxes, question wasteful defense contract spending, revise the tax code back to Ike’s day, but leave health care for our grandparents (and for us when we are that age) alone!
