Bluejays track wins 2A SJBL title

The Mancos Bluejays won the 2A San Juan Basin League track and field championship Saturday in Grand Junction, as 11 Bluejays advanced to the state meet on Thursday in Lakewood.

The Lady Bluejays were fourth and will send four to state.

Kenny Philpot and Cade Mitchell won the high jump (6-01) and discus (123-00) events to make state. Eric Lewis made state with second- and third-place finishes in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at 2:01.39 and 4:36.13. Trey Gordenier (triple jump), Cody Colyer (shot put) and Branson Mitchell (400-meter dash) all made state. The 4 x 100, 200, 400 and 800-relay teams all qualified for state.

Lady Bluejays Aimee Johnson and Devin Kroeker made state in the high jump, and Kelsey Corbin (800 and 1,600) and Lindzie Thuerer (discus) made state.

The Dolores Lady Bears were second as a team in the SJBL. Lexi Atkinson, No. 2 in 2A, won the SJBL title in the 100-meter dash in 12.67 and was second in the long jump at 16-11. Cassie Lard qualified for state in the 200, Rachel Beverlin made state in the 800, Michelle Kline (400), Cydney McHenry (100 and 300-hurdles), and the 4 x 200, 400 and 800-relays teams made state.

Alex Berholtz led the Bears with first-place times in the 110- and 300-hurdles in 16.56 and 42.24 to make state. Stephen O’Connor-Seville made state in the 400 and the 4 x 200-relay team advanced to state.

Kyli Banks advanced to state for the Dove Creek Lady Bulldogs by winning the 1A SJBL title in the discus (113-00). Shelbie Knuckles (100-hurdles) and Cori Guynes (100 and 300-hurdles) advanced to state. Kristin Knuckles (3,200) and Madison McCourt will also be at the state meet.

Austin Beanland qualified for state in the discus for the Bulldogs.

The 1A and 2A state championships are held at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood from Thursday to Saturday.
