Lingo, Heaton have top throws at SL meet

Montezuma-Cortez High School junior throwers Ashley Lingo and Laura Heaton continue to excel in track and field.

The two advanced to the Colorado 4A state meet in Lakewood on Thursday by winning Southwestern League championship’s in the discus and shot put in Grand Junction last Saturday.

Lingo, No. 5 in 4A, won with a toss of 119-00, beating teammates Maniesha Buck (107-03) and Randy Elliot (103-06) for second- and third-place. Heaton, No. 9 in 4A, won the shot put with a throw of 37-02.50.

Senior Carly Wolf placed second in the 400-meter dash in 60.33. As a team, the Lady Panthers took sixth with 55 points. Durango won the championship with 123 points.

The Panthers are sending five to state after a sixth-place finish with 62 points. Grand Junction took the team title with 125 points. Senior James Sprague, No. 13 in 4A, was second place in the 800-meter run at 1:59.34, a personal record. Max Demby, No. 6 in 4A, was also second in the long jump, leaping 22-01.00. The 4 x 200 team of Demby, Destry Smith, Brady Yates and William Wright made state with their second-place time of 1:31.86, and the 4 x 400 team of Sprague, Yates, Wright and Smith are going to state after finishing second in 3:28.07.

Senior Corey Adams took second in the triple jump at 41-07.00

Individuals must finish-ranked in the top-18 in 4A of their respective events to qualify for state.

The state meet runs Thursday through Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.
