Durango train rides benefit the Goose
Ride the Durango and Silverton winter train on Friday, Feb. 5 at 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and help support the Galloping Goose Historical Society.
A $125 ticket donation includes wine, beer and snacks on heated coaches, lunch, and goody bag with Goose glass. A ticket includes five-hour train ride through the Animas Canyon and San Juan National Forest.

Road Runner announces schedule
Road Runner Transportation announces the following holiday schedule:
No transit route will operate on Friday. The Stage Lines will leave Durango at 7 a.m. Friday for Grand Junction and leave Mancos at 7:30 a.m., Cortez at 8:02 a.m. and Dolores at 8:15 a.m.
Dial-A-Ride service in Ignacio will operate regular weekend hours on Saturday and Sunday. Stage Lines will operate normal hours on Saturday and Sunday.
All routes will resume regular hours on Monday.
Steward program begins Jan. 21
The High Desert Conservation District and CSU Small Acreages are offering the Master Land Steward Program, which begins Jan. 21 at the First National Bank in Cortez.
This nine-week course gives you the tools you need to create the Southwest Colorado farm and ranch you’ve envisioned or can help you rejuvenate the land you have been working for decades.
Classes run from 6-8:30 p.m. each Thursday through March 17. The course includes an individual site visit and assessment, a soil test, at least one field trip and an introduction to many of the experts in the area.

62 species counted in annual bird count
Organizers of the annual Cortez Christmas Bird Count have updated the number of species that they counted this year 62 species.
Seven birders braved adverse weather conditions on Saturday, Dec. 26 for the count.
Three additional birders offered their tallies within the count circle by watching their bird feeders, and helped add to the total number of species identified in Montezuma County on count day.
Among the species that organizer Jason St. Pierre reported were a Prairie Falcon, Say’s Phoebe, Northern Shrike, two Lincoln’s Sparrows and a Wilson’s Snipe.
City offers Christmas tree service
Cortez offers drop-off and pick-up service for Christmas trees.
Through Jan. 11, residents may drop Christmas trees at the parking lot at the southeast corner of Elm and First streets or the BMX parking lot on the south side of Empire Street.
For residents unable to drop off their tree, the city also offers curb-level pick-up service starting on Monday, Jan. 4, and ending Friday, Jan. 8. Trees should be placed on the curb in front of homes, not in an alley.
Collected trees will be chipped and used as mulch.
