The Four Corners Rifle & Pistol Club Junior Shooters took second place as a team in the annual Elzey Garland Memorial Jr. Shooting Competition at the Four Corners Rifle & Pistol Club indoor shooting range with a score of 341-8x.

Montrose won the competition with its total of 350-3x. There were 27 participants.

The event is open to all youths under the age of 20, and all competitors shoot at 50 feet.

The competition’s name came from the Garland family, which gave a contribution to the Junior Shooters program about one year ago and helped found the indoor range.

The participants in the competition are taught to shoot in four positions: prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. Although it takes a long time to master the positions, competitors only shoot in the positions they are most comfortable with. There were no age groups set in this match; they were divided into four categories. Category one shoots four prone targets, category two shoots two prone targets and two sitting targets; category three shoots one prone, one sitting and two kneeling targets; and category four shoots one prone, one kneeling, one sitting and one offhand target.

Jr. Shooter, Tia Imel, 8, of Mancos, took first place in category one. Wrangler Hinton, 18, of Cortez, was second. Elijah Winkles, 14, of Cortez, took third.

Category two was won by Chase Fury from Dolores. Fellow Dolores residents Rhett and Veronica Quackenbush were second and third place, respectively.

Category three saw Shilo Culver from Montrose win. Grant Smith of Montrose was second place, and Brian Romine from Cortez was third.

Category four, the hardest category, was won by Ashley Lingo of Arriola with a score of 388-23x. She was the high score and match winner. Lingo received a trophy and had her name engraved in a plaque that is kept at the range.

The most improved shooter award went to Imel with an improved score of 148 points.
