“Thou shall not steal except by majority vote” (Exodus 20:15 as modified by society’s do-gooders).

Most people have a moral compass and will agree that theft is wrong. In a moral and free society, producers of goods and services must convince the consumer to voluntarily remit money in exchange for their product. Unfortunately in today’s society, special interests have learned that if they cannot convince consumers to voluntarily remit funds, they will use the power of government (through taxing schemes) to force consumers to purchase their wares.

Of course, they sell these schemes as positive for the public at large and utilize the community do-gooders to do their bidding. Although we can agree that health care is an important service, but are not also food, clothing, housing, transportation, and a myriad of other consumer goods? Should we then not promote a sales tax to subsidize these industries?

Although consumers have already voted with their pocketbooks not to fund the projects desired by Referendum 5A for the Montezuma County Hospital District, do-gooders utilizing the phenomena of “concentrated benefits and disbursed costs” press on. Do-gooders know that it is easier to enact their dreams by the electoral process.

Vote no on 5A.
