Cybersecurity month urges extra caution
In recognition of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Four Corners Community Bank recommends that consumers take extra precaution to protect the data on their mobile device by doing the following:
Use the passcode lock on a smartphone and other devices.
Log out completely when finished with a mobile banking session.
Protect a phone from viruses and malicious software, or malware, by installing mobile security software.
Use caution when downloading apps.
Download the updates for a phone and mobile apps.
Avoid storing sensitive information on a mobile device.
People should tell their financial institution immediately if they change their phone number or lose their mobile device.
Be aware of shoulder surfers.
Wipe a mobile device before it’s donated, sold or traded using specialized software or using the manufacturer’s recommended technique.
Beware of mobile phishing.
Watch out for public Wi-Fi.
Report any suspected fraud to the bank immediately.

Volunteers sought for AARP Tax-Aide
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax-preparation and assistance service, is seeking volunteers to help Colorado taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their 2015 tax returns.
Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate. Tax-Aide is particularly in need of volunteers who are bilingual in English and Spanish to support the increasing number of Spanish-speaking taxpayers seeking assistance.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers receive free tax training and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses. They help taxpayers at sites around the state.

Ignacio haunted house to be open weekends
Southern Ute Community Action Programs Youth Services, in collaboration with Magic Brush, will host a haunted house from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 23, 24, 29 and 31 and from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 30 at the new Education Literacy Health & Inspiration Community Building, 115 Ute St. in Ignacio.
Admission is $5, and it will be collected at the door.

“Death with Dignity” to be discussed
“End of Life Choices” is a Durango group interested in informing the public of the various options and proposals for “Death with Dignity” now available and being considered by various legislatures and courts locally and throughout the United States. The group will present the documentary “The Trouble with Dying” on Nov. 3 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
A community discussion will follow. Refreshments will be served from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The 47 minute video will begin at 5:20 p.m.
Downtown Durango big on Halloween fun
Downtown Durango businesses will participate in “Children’s Halloween” on Oct. 31.
Nearly 100 downtown Durango merchants will offer Halloween treats from 4 and 6 p.m. for children 10-years old and younger dressed in costumes and accompanied by an adult. Durango Fire Protection District personnel will be in front of the Main Mall with a fire truck distributing glow sticks. Participating merchants throughout downtown will display bright orange pumpkins in their windows on Halloween to signal their involvement.
