Dear Editor:

I have been watching the city council recall effort with considerable interest and feel compelled to comment.

I find it astonishing that the proponents could offer up no viable replacement candidates. This speaks volumes as to the legitimacy of their recall efforts. Another question comes to mind: Why only recall five of the seven current city council members? Do the remaining two council members sympathize with their personal agenda and their behind-the-scenes co-conspirators?

I commend the City of Cortez for their responsible decision to involve themselves with the controversial Tucker Lane extension project. This decision exhibits forward-thinking proper planning and should meet traffic needs well into the future. This is not the first street extension/improvement project the city has been involved in. To name a few: West Empire from Elm to Broadway, East Montezuma from Mildred to Texas, East Seventh from Madison to Sligo and numerous annual street improvement projects. We would still be driving on gravel streets if not for the city’s involvement.

I urge all registered eligible voters to exercise their freedom and right to be heard by voting in next Tuesday’s May 3 election.
