Rob Englehart Injured in Accident
Rob Englehart, song of Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Englehart of Lewis, was involved in a construction accident near Pagosa Springs recently. His arm was caught in the belt of a gravel crusher and had to be amputated above the elbow. He also suffered some tooth damage and torn muscles. While still a patient in Mercy Hospital he is reportedly doing well and in very good spirits.
County Nurse Sets Up Schedule for Rico Visits
The Dolores County Nurse, Patricia Smith, has announced that she will be visiting Rico on a regular basis starting Friday, October 3 and thereafter every Friday of every month. The nurse's visits are open to all residents of the Rico area and persons are invited to bring their children in for immunizations while adults are invited to come in for blood pressure checks.
Delinquent Personal Property Tax List This Week
Published in this week's issue of the Dolores Star is the Delinquent Personal Property Tax list for Montezuma County. County Treasurer, R. R. Hindmarsh said he was pleased to note that it is the shortest list in several years.
Cattle Mutilation Near Lone Cone
Cattle mutilations have been making headlines in many Colorado newspapers for the past several weeks, mainly on the eastern slope, but more recently the northwestern corner and now moving to the southwestern corner with the two latest reports coming from Pagosa Springs and Norwood.
San Miguel County Sheriff Fred Ellerd said there were no bullet wounds but there was the possibility that the animal had died of natural causes and was then mutilated.
State President Speaks to SW CowBelles
The Southwestern CowBelles held their annual Fall Luncheon Sept. 16. Twenty five guests members and eighteen guests were present. Five members of the La Plata CowBelles, three members of the Archuleta CowBelles, and three members of the New Mexico Totah CowBelles attended. The door prize was won by Bess Toner, an Archuleta CowBelle.
Tennis Tournament
Winners in the first Durango Open tennis tournament held last weekend on the Fort Lewis College courts. Paula Bradford of Farmington took the women's singles crown. Bradford and her sister Colleen Smith of Dolores teamed up to take the women's doubles event with a 6-0, 6-1 win over the Durango Duo of Gail Greve and Marge Wigton.
Rotary Club Hears Own History
Dolores Rotary Members Tuesday evening were treated to a program arranged by Jack Kinkade that featured a charter member of the club, Raye Benham.
Benham noted that the club was formed in June 1941 and included a number of dynamic individuals interested in the community.
County News
Ernest Boren, county road superintendent and Fred Thomas, as county engineer discussed progress of work on the Dry Canyon road and what was done with the ponderosa pine trees on the right of way. Southwest Forest Industries sent me to cut the trees so they could be salvaged.
The board of commissioners approved a renewal for a 3.2 license for Judd's Market south of Cortez.
Ron Driscoll gave a report on his job of mapping all property in the county for county assessor A. Wayne Denny. He reports that he has 42 percent of the total mapping job completed.
Wild Turkey Season Opens Saturday
Some Colorado sportsmen will begin hunting for their Thanksgiving Dinner this week with the opening of the wild turkey season Saturday, September 27.
"The turkey is a wary bird and offers a high quality hunt," Bob Tully, wildlife manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, said. "It's the trophy of small game animals. Not everybody's successful, but they do have a good time hunting the birds."
