Five have announced candidacy for two seats on the Southern Ute Indian Tribe’s tribal council as elders carry on with recall efforts to oust five sitting members and the chairman.

Incumbent Alex S. Cloud is running alongside challengers Lorelei Cloud, Marjorie Borst, Kevin R. Frost and Renee J. Cloud in the upcoming general election.

In early September, tribal elder Lynda D’Wolf led a meeting of the elders that was rife with concerns over the state of the council. Elders complained the current board lacks leadership as well as respect for the tribe. Other complaints surrounded the SUCAP program and giving government jobs to non-tribal members.

The Durango Herald’s calls to reach the tribal council were unsuccessful.

The general election is slated for Friday, Nov. 6, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
