Durango sophomore Elijah Fenton had two goals in the first nine minutes against Montezuma-Cortez on Tuesday.

And the Demons continued to pile it on, leading 6-0 by the 16th minute.

“It was an eye-opener for sure,” said M-CHS head coach Sean Fitzgerald.

Durango found the net another four times in the second half to end the match early with a 10-0 win.

While some of the Demons goals came from skilled offensive players, some were brought on by the Panthers’ defensive mistakes.

“It was a rough game,” Fitzgerald said. “They’re good. They really know how to play there. But I think we could’ve done better with fewer mistakes.”

The Panthers fell to 1-5 after the loss to Durango, but Fitzgerald plans to work on defense and formations leading up to their next game against Pagosa Springs on Friday.

“I think Pagosa is going to be really good,” Fitzgerald said. “I think they’re going to be kind of like a Durango. I think it’s going to be a little better, but there’s still a lot of things to work on, with the defense especially, and no mistakes.”

The Panthers (1-5) will host Pagosa Springs (5-0) on Friday at 5 p.m. in a conference matchup.
