Sleep under the stars in this modern yurt nestled in Unaweep Canyon, near Grand Junction, Colorado.
This 30-foot diameter, 760 square-foot yurt sits on 25 acres, sleeps four and has a full size bathroom with a bear claw bath tub. “It’s situated in a pretty cool spot,” said owner and builder Nick Coleman, who lived in the yurt for six months, spending an entire winter in the scenic canyon. “I wanted to make it comfy and nice.”
Coleman built a loft under a dome window that cantilevers over the kitchen and bathroom.
“It’s a really good spot to star gaze,” he said.
Unaweep Canyon makes an extraordinary setting, where guests may see more wildlife than people. It’s a spectacular area for birding, big horn sheep, and elk – lots of them.
“I’ve seen hundreds of head of elk coming off the Uncompahgre Plateau and down into the valley,” Coleman said. “When they’re in rut, you can listen to them bugle all night long.”
Wildlife, hiking, and climbing abound.
“It’s great if you’re into rock climbing,” Coleman said. “There’s a lot of great climbing up there.”
Coleman said guests are surprised by the serenity.
“It’s pretty magical,” he said. “Every evening, the sunsets are stunning. You can see miles and miles down that canyon.”
