The Southwest Colorado Youth Baseball Minors' and Majors' seasons came to an end this weekend in state tournament play.
The Minors traveled to Grand Junction for their tournament, and their opening game against North Denver on Friday took almost as long as their commute.
The game remained tied after the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, until North Denver drove in two in the top of the 10th to pull ahead. After the Minors were held scoreless in the bottom of the 10th, the three-hour-and-22-minute game finally concluded, with North Denver outlasting the Minors, 8-6.
On Saturday, the Minors were matched up against Academy (Colorado Springs) in their second game of the double-elimination tournament. The Minors limited Academy to four runs, but scored only two of their own, falling 4-2 in the season-ending game.
The Majors fared similarly in their tournament in Durango, dropping their opening game on Saturday to North Boulder. North Boulder piled on nine runs in the first inning, then added another in the second to jump out to a 10-0 lead.
The Majors put a run on the board in the third inning, but could not mount a comeback, losing 11-1 in four innings.
The Majors offense bounced back on Sunday, scoring nine runs, but came up short against Academy (Colorado Springs) in the elimination game.
The Majors led 4-3 after four innings, but Academy rallied for nine runs in the fifth. The Majors responded with five runs in the final two frames, but Academy prevailed, 13-9.
