The U.S. Forest Service is actively monitoring a wildfire atop Haycamp Mesa, about nine miles northeast of Dolores.

Lightning is believed to have sparked the blaze about 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15. By press deadlines on Monday, the fire had scorched 8.4 acres, said U.S. Forest Service fire management officer Patrick Seekins.

“There may be some growth today, but there’s no real concerns or issues,” Seekins said on Monday morning.

Not only are current weather conditions favorable to contain the fire, said that there was a lack of any available fuel for the fire to spread. He added firefighters were monitoring the situation.

“It’s barely putting up any smoke,” said Seekins.
