M-CHS grad wins Gonzales scholarship

This year’s Mickey Gonzales Memorial scholarship has been awarded to Kaleb Lancaster-Milligan, a 2015 graduate of Montezuma-Cortez High School.

Kaleb worked hard in achieving his diploma and his desire to continue his education to a higher level. Kaleb will be majoring as a Financial Planner at the University of Arizona in Tucson. His objective is to obtain the professional title of “Actuary”.

Family and friends who were instrumental in forming the Mickey Gonzales Memorial Scholarship wish Kaleb Lancaster-Milligan success in all of his future educational endeavors.

Football camp registration nears

The second annual Four Corners Football Camp is scheduled for July 17-18 at 8-11 a.m. at Dolores High School.

Cost is $30 per player, including a camp T-shirt. Registration forms are available at the Dolores School District Office and at the Cortez Rec Center. Register by July 13.

This camp will provide instruction in football fundamentals, such as passing, receiving, ball carrying, footwork, blocking, and tackling. This camp provides an opportunity to learn the game of football in a relaxed atmosphere.

Athletes should wear shorts, T-shirts, cleats or tennis shoes.

Habitat for Humanity to hold meeting

Habitat For Humanity of Montezuma County will hold a free public information session for low-income families/households interested in applying to partner with Habitat to become homeowners. The session begins at 6 p.m. on July 27 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 110 W. North Street, Cortez.

Potential applicants must be residents of Montezuma County for at least a year.

Free childcare will be available.

Horsemen plan monthly meeting

The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday, July 9, 7:00 p.m.at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Guests are always encouraged to attend.

This month’s presentation will take place in the pavilion at 7:30 with a saddle fitting demonstration by Kristi Sweney. Kristi will show how horses with sore backs or a “downhill” conformation can have their saddles shimmed for a better fit. She will also have Cashel saddles on hand for the fitting demo.

United Blood Services will host these local blood drives:

1:30 to 5:30 p.m. July 2 at First United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park, Cortez.

2 to 5 p.m. July 3 at the KOA Campground, 30090 U.S. Highway 160.

Noon to 5 p.m. July 14, Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside, Dolores.

1:30 to 5 p.m. July 31 at Southwest Memorial Hospital, 1311 N. Mildred, Cortez.

Fair carcass winners announced

The Montezuma County Extension Office announces that Kody Gregory had the Grand Champion Carcass Beef at the 2014 Montezuma County Fair.

Congratulations also went to Kooper Long for the Reserve Grand Champion Carcass Beef.

The Extension Office apologized for the delay but explained that it was a time-consuming and costly project for 4-H and FFA members.
