Doty plans plein air demonstration

Mancos Public Library hosts a plein air painting demonstration with Mancos artist Deb Doty on Thursday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m., at 211 W. First St.

Doty will demonstrate some of the basic skills and techniques for plein air painting outside on library grounds. It's a free event, and all ages are welcome.

BrewFest needs sponsors for event

The Mancos Summer BrewFest is looking for sponsors for its Aug. 15 event.

Proceeds benefit Mancos Valley Resources and The Mancos River Trail.

A $500 sponsors receives a free vendor booth, name and logo on a beer glass, name on banners and promotional posters, 4 complimentary tickets and acknowledgement during stage announcements.

A $250 sponsor receives name on banners and promotional posters, four complimentary tickets and public acknowledgement.

A $100 sponsor receives two complimentary tickets and public acknowledgement.

Organizers need sponsorship for the $500 and $250 levels by July 7 and $100 sponsors by Aug. 7.

League of Women hosts education coordinator

The July 11 meeting of The Montezuma County League of Women Voters will feature Brad Finch, regional coordinator of the Three Rivers Education Foundation.

The Foundation's focus is improving literacy and reading skills in primary school students. Its programs are available in the Dolores, Cortez and Silverton School Districts.

Among the services provided are 16 weeks of reading tutoring with trained tutors and small groups of students, and materials for teachers.

Three Rivers Education Foundation is also creating something called "Little Libraries."

Hear about these programs and the Little Libraries at 9 a.m. on July 11, 2015, at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Dolores.

Fair carcass winners announced

The Montezuma County Extension Office announces that Kody Gregory had the Grand Champion Carcass Beef at the 2014 Montezuma County Fair.

Congratulations also went to Kooper Long for the Reserve Grand Champion Carcass Beef.

The Extension Office apologized for the delay but explained that it was a time-consuming and costly project for 4-H and FFA members.

Construction begins at Navajo State Park

A construction project to improve traffic flow inside Navajo State Park will take place through the summer.

Construction crews will work, primarily, Monday through Thursday to avoid busy weekends. During construction, park users could experience short delays getting to campsites and onto the boat ramp.

The new intersection will improve traffic flow to and from the boat ramp and to the main camping areas.

Native plant society to seek wildflowers

The San Juan/Four Corners Native Plant Society will offer a free wildflower walk called "Wildflowers of Hermosa Fens & Wetlands" on July 8 on the west side of Bolam Pass.

People encouraged to enjoy camping

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will host the Great American Campout until Sept. 7.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the National Wildlife Federation, which is sponsoring the 11th Great American Campout, encourage people to camp.

The Great American Campout wants people to commit to camping this year and raise money for wildlife, with the help of top supporters who, with every pledge made, will donate $1 up to $100,000 for existing efforts to protect the outdoors, wildlife and its habitat across the country.
