DAV salutes Jack & Janelle’s Restaurant

Jack Kays of Jack and Janelle’s Country Kitchen receives a plaque from Robert Sanders, commander of the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans Commander Robert Sanders.

The Colorado chapter of Disabled American Veterans recently selected Jack & Janelle’s Restaurant for their outstanding service to American military personnel.

“More than 600 nominations were received from across Colorado,” said Dunger Smith No. 44 DAV Commander Robert Sanders.

The annual statewide recognition was officially marked with a plaque presentation on Wednesday, June 24. Standing in front of a U.S. flag with a dozen portraits of veterans, restaurant owner Jack Kays was nearly speechless after a round of applause from patrons.

“I was wowed,” said Kays. “This is a great honor.”

In business for the past six years on Main Street, Kays said the family-owned restaurant had always catered to military veterans, providing discounts on meals and free meeting space for veterans organizations.

“My dad served in the Navy,” said Kays. “My twin sons are currently serving.”

In a nomination letter, Sanders described Jack & Janelle’s as a gathering place for local veterans, noting that the owners graciously accepted and treated veterans with respect.

“As a small, individually owned restaurant, Jack and Janelle’s has a huge impact in our community,” said Sanders.
