Freed from the Montezuma County jail on May 14, it took local authorities four weeks before announcing the release of a sexually violent predator.

The Cortez Police Department made the required community notification via a press release on Thursday, June 11. The identity of the sexually violent predator was revealed after watching a near 20-minute informational video via the department’s website.

According to police, the sexually violent predator in question is Andrew Allmon, 57, of 600 N. State St. The residence is in close proximity to Southwest Open School.

Police said Allmon, a registered sex offender, was determined to present a high potential to re-offend. Allmon is currently under three years of intensive supervised probation.

Authorities warn residents not to harass, threaten or intimidate any registered sex offender.

Allmon was released last month after serving 631 days in jail. His release was mandated due to the terms of a plea agreement, which was reached during a March re-trial moments before an eyewitness was expected to testify against Allmon.

Charged in a six-count indictment, Allmon pleaded guilty to felony attempted child sex assault and misdemeanor unlawful sexual contact charges.
