In a few weeks, the Cortez Middle School track will be lined with walkers of all ages working together to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event, scheduled this year for June 20.

Montezuma County Relay for Life leadership is also planning a Survivor’s BBQ on June 18 to celebrate those who have conquered the deadly disease and as well as the caregivers that provide invaluable support during their battle.

“We’re really trying to do something special for survivors and caregivers. We decided to do a dinner so they can come, sit down and have a nice meal together,” said Sandi Corbett, a sixth-year participant in Relay for Life, who is coordinating this year’s event.

The organized, overnight community fundraising walk takes place June 20 from noon to midnight and features food, games and other entertainment. Corbett says teams and individuals can still sign up to raise funds, and spots are still open for food vendors interested in setting up at the event.

As a cancer survivor herself, Corbett is excited for and is passionate about the event and the work of the American Cancer Society.

“Because of the research that the American Cancer Society has supported, I’m actually alive today,” said Corbett. “I have children, and I know their risks for getting cancer are very high because of me, so that’s one of the main reasons I participate in this every year and support it. I don’t want anybody else to have to get cancer.”
