League of Women Voters hosts co-op director

The League of Women Voters of Montezuma County will meet on June 13, at 9 a.m., at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Dolores. The program will be presented by Ole Bye, Executive Director of the Southwest Farm Fresh Co-op.

One of the major changes in Montezuma County in the past five years has been the return of young farmers to the area. The program concerns the successes and challenges facing these farmers as they look for suitable land to farm and try to get their produce to market.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Library hosts puppeteer on June 10

Next in the 2015 Cortez Public Library’s Summer Reading Program’s Family Entertainment Series is Kate O’Kami, puppeteer, on Wednesday, June 10, at 2 p.m.

Folktales from around the world tell of girls and boys who become super heros in their world from finding magic potion cures to slaying dragons. Kate will tell of one of these superhero stories. She will then demonstrate her limberjack puppets.

Sixth annual CMU Student Showcase Winners

Clinton Pruitt, of Pleasant View, has won first place in Colorado Mesa University Student Showcase’s Career and Technical Education category, with the project Super Critical CO2 Hops Extraction.

The sixth annual showcase was held Friday, April 24, on CMU’s main campus.

The showcase featured 235 projects presented by more than 500 undergraduates from Colorado Mesa University and Western Colorado Community College. Projects included scholarly and/or creative activities ranging from artistic exhibits, paper presentations, posters, readings, demonstrations and performance.

The showcase builds on classroom experience and allows students to share their work with faculty, peers, and community members.

Lecture series presents ‘Skies’ and ‘Agave’

Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance presents Dr. Ray Williamson on Saturday, June 20, 8:30 p.m., at the Hawkins Preserve in Cortez.

Williamson will present a night sky presentation “Building a Calendar from Watching the Skies,” a non-technological approach in which he will discuss the role of skywatching for survival of ancient people.

On Wednesday, June 24, Sharon Edgar Greenhill presents the award-winning documentary “Agave is Life,” 7 p.m., at the Sunflower Theatre, 8 E. Main St., in Cortez. “Agave Is Life” chronicles mankind’s relationship with the agave plant.

Birds of the Durango Nature Center

Join expert birder Aimee Way in learning about the songbirds and raptors that breed or use the Durango Nature Center on Saturday, May 30 , 8:30-10:30 p.m.

Cost is $10 for non-members, free for members.

Aimee will share tips on visual ID, song and call ID, and talk about the different habitats present and birds associated with habitats at the 140-acre Nature Center. Bring binoculars and a bird book if you have them. Entry-level binoculars will be available, but your own binoculars are preferred.
