SATURDAY, MAY 16

11:47 a.m. A 69-year-old man reported that his home nurse stole a $100 money order. Records from the Post Office confirmed the man’s suspicion. The alleged suspect was issued a summons for theft.

9:22 p.m. An elderly couple from England reported that more than $2,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from their Baymont Hotel room in Cortez. The missing items included a ½ karat diamond ring, pearl bracelet and two pair of earrings. The investigation continues.

SUNDAY, MAY 17

12:45 a.m. Deputies reported they were involved in a high-speed pursuit of a stolen Honda Civic. The chase originated on Main Street and ended on U.S. 160 in La Plata County after officers deployed spike strips. Described as a white male wearing a red cap, white T-shirt and jeans, the driver fled the scene. A K-9 unit was dispatched, but officers were unable to locate the suspect.

2:00 p.m. A homeowner reported that two windows were broken at a rental property on the 12000 block of Colorado 145. A person of interest was named.

4:23 p.m. A woman reported that a 35-year-old man left harassing voice mail messages and melted a pair of shorts onto a welding rod that was jammed into the electrical box of her County Road N home. The man was issued summons for trespassing, harassment and criminal mischief.

7:28 p.m. A deputy reported that he stopped to assist a hitchhiker near Mile Marker 28 on U.S. 160. The 54-year-old man was arrested on two outstanding warrants.

8 p.m. A woman reported that neighbors have repeatedly broken into her brother’s residence on the 6000 block of Road 23.6 to use the bathroom, because they don’t have indoor plumbing. The neighbors rejected the woman’s claim, and cited she was harassing them.

MONDAY, MAY 18

11:39 a.m. A deputy reported that he stopped to assist two hitchhikers on the 7000 block of County Road 25. A male subject was arrested on an outstanding warrant. No information was provided whether the officer provided aid to the female subject.

8:40 p.m. A man reported a stolen saddle, after giving it to a friend for safekeeping last fall. The investigation continues.

TUESDAY, MAY 19

9:00 a.m. A water official reported the cold theft of four industrial batteries from water meter boxes on County Road X and County Road 21. The total loss, including stolen goods and property damage, was valued at $1,512.

8:36 p.m. A deputy responded to a menacing call on the 28000 block of U.S. 160 where two drunken neighbors were involved in a verbal altercation. Both subjects agreed to stop yelling and return to their homes. About 45 minutes later, officers returned to the scene after a report that one man threatened to kill the other with a shotgun. The alleged aggressor barricaded himself inside his home. About an hour later, officers peaked inside a window to find the subject sleeping with a shotgun between his legs. Deputies finally cleared the scene at 11 p.m., citing the man had apparently passed out.

Friday, May 8

12:35 p.m. Deputies responded to the 25000 block of Road L for a report of a vandalized mailbox.

Sunday, May 10

7:30 a.m. A woman reported in the 30100 block of Highway 160 that her dog went missing at the fairgrounds. The woman said she did not know if the dog was lost, ran off or was stolen. The dog was a female Border Collie, with black ears and white chest and white legs with black spots.

Tuesday, May 12

11:51 a.m. A deputy was called to the 30000 block of Highway 184 for a report of a missing four-wheeler and golf cart.

Wednesday, May 13

9:29 a.m. A deputy responded to the 12000 block of Road 26 for a report of a lawn mower that had its fuel replaced with ether. The lawn mower’s owner speculated about who might have tampered with his lawn mower, but the deputy was unable to reach that person.
