Daisy Mahaffey places a flag on a soldier’s grave at Sunnyside Cemetary in Lewis.
Peggy Scates takes a flag to place on the gravesite of Confederate soldier George May at the old Dolores Cemetary.

For the past six years, the members of the Sleeping Ute Mountain Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution have marked the Graves of all Veterans in the rural cemeteries in Montezuma County prior to Memorial Day Weekend. The flags used are the small 4-by-6-inch flags and may remain at the gravesite after Memorial Day. Members ask your help in locating these Veterans in the various rural cemeteries.

If your loved one does not have some type of veterans marker in order for us to determine they are a veteran we ask you to call one of the following ladies before Sunday, May 17 and give them the information.

Each year about 16 members of the DAR honors veterans by placing approximately 300 flags in 17 rural cemeteries. They will make every effort to place the American flag on the requested grave. Plans are to place the flags in the different cemeteries the week of May 18th. Because of the number of flags requested plus the location of the cemeteries we have listed the dates we plan to place the flags in the various cemeteries:

This group will place flags on Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22.

Special requests for flags in other cemeteries – please call June Head 565-3880 or Daisy Mahaffey (970) 739-0627 and every effort will be made to honor your special requests. Please call prior to Tuesday, May 19th.

The DAR ladies when needed will remove these small flags when there is any sign of deterioration. The flags will then be disposed of in a proper manner.
