Linked to a murder plot of a school principal and sheriff six years ago, a Dove Creek man now faces multiple charges of child abuse.

Charged as a habitual offender, Cody Barr, 25, faces three counts of child abuse in connection to incidents during two months last summer. Court records reveal the alleged victim was only 10 weeks old when doctors discovered multiple arm, leg and foot fractures along with healing rib fractures.

Medical officials reported that the infant, now a year old, suffered 17 fractures, including two skull injuries. The child also suffered spleen and liver lacerations and genital bruising.

Court records further reveal that the “non-accidental trauma” injuries weren’t the result of a single incident, despite claims from Barr that he accidentally dropped the baby, his son, in the bathroom at a local hotel.

According to police, several weeks passed after Barr allegedly dropped the baby before medical treatment was sought. Once at Southwest Memorial Hospital, the infant was airlifted to a Denver hospital.

Barr was convicted of burglary in 2009. At the time, he initially faced three felony burglary charges, including one at the home of a co-defendant’s relative, where thousands of dollars in cash and numerous weapons were stolen.

After his arrest on the burglary charges, Barr reportedly told authorities that his co-defendant had planned to kill the Dove Creek High School principal and then ambush the Dolores County sheriff. It’s unknown if charges were ever filed in that case.
