Canyons of the Ancients gets exposure

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is getting its day in the sun as a featured attraction in Colorado Life magazine’s March/April edition.

Plugged with the tease “Uncover Mysterious Ruins” on the issue’s cover, the story takes a look at the Anasazi Heritage Center and Hovenweep National Monument, as well.

Author Dan Leeth makes much of the density of archaeological ruins and the collection at the heritage center. He also visited and photographed some of the more remote ruins.

Archaeologists examine Petrified Forest

The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society presents William Reitze at 7 p.m. May 5 at the Methodist Church, 515 Park St., Cortez.

Reitze will discuss “The Petrified Forest National Park Boundary Expansion Project: Re-assessing Occupation and Land Use in El Desierto Pintado.” He will discuss archaeological research on the newly expanded Petrified Forest National Park, including preliminary results on several recently discovered, large Basketmaker sites.

Site-surveying class available at FLC

Assistant State Archaeologist Kevin Black will teach a class on “Basic Site Surveying Techniques” from May 29 to June 1 at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College.

This 25-hour course is part of the Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification, and is open to the public. No previous classes are required.

The course will discuss site identification, surveying methods, recording procedures, basic equipment usage, reading topographic maps and field procedures. At least one half day will be spent in the field.

The cost for the class is $12.

Mesa Verde-planning services available

A full range of trip-planning services including tickets for ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours and bus tours are now available at the Colorado Welcome Center,at 928 E. Main St. in Cortez. The CWC is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be open daily for extended hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 22 through Sept. 7.

Tickets are available now for Balcony House tours at Mesa Verde National Park. Tickets for Long House and Cliff Palace tours will also be available for purchase when these sites open for tours on May 22. Tours are $4 per person, per tour; purchase your tickets up to two days in advance at the CWC or at the park’s Visitor and Research Center, located just off U.S. 160 at the park entrance.

‘Chiropractic Care for Your Horse’

Dr. Petra Sullwold, DC, CAC, will present “Chiropractic Care For Your Horse” at the Mesa Verde Back Country Horsemen meeting on Tuesday, May 5, at the Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Dolores Road, in Cortez.

Arrive for dinner at 6:15 p.m.; the presentation starts at 7 p.m. Sullwold, certified by the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association, will present the benefits of regular chiropractic care for your horse and how you can determine if your horse needs it.

First Baptist Church plans recital

The First Baptist Church will host a recital, introducing Nick Romeo, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3. Refreshments are included.

Romeo is a journalist and author with a strong amateur interest in music. His writing has appeared in National Geographic, The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and other publications.

Nick has played piano for most of his life. In college, he served as a staff accompanist for the Voice and Opera Program at Northwestern University.

His recital will feature works by Bach and Chopin, and Nick will speak briefly to give background information about the composers and compositions.
