If you are a parent of a child under 8 years old, the Children’s Festival in Cortez is the place to be Saturday.

The Children’s Festival will be this Saturday, April 25, at the Cortez Rec Center and Park de Vida from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tyra Hughes, event coordinator, said the event is a combination of the Montelores Early Childhood Fair and the Montesorri Preschool’s Kidfest.

Inside the Rec Center, Hughes said parents can have their children checked out by medical professionals for free. There will be vision, hearing and dental screenings, in addition to developmental screenings and emotional and social screenings.

“Parents can get a lot of health information,” Hughes said.

Parents will also get the opportunity to purchase inexpensive car seats or have their car seats checked for proper installations at a safety check point.

“Parents can get a car seat for $25 at this event,” Hughes said.

Parents will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize if they attend all the health check points.

Outside, there will be lots of fun activities for children and their families.

There will be information on bike safety and $5 helmets. There will be finger printing and identification cards for children.

Hughes said some children might be a fan of the Teddy Bear Clinic from 9 to noon. A child simply has to bring one of their favorite toys to get a checkup.

“It helps ease any fears children might have of doctors,” Hughes said.

Hughes said that the fair helps keep children healthy.

“Children who are healthy are more ready to learn,” Hughes said.

Hughes said everyone is welcome to the fair but it is geared toward children 8 years old and younger.
