Swift wants to expand your quilting world
The La Plata Quilters Guild will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 495 Florida Road.
Beverly Swift will present “Expand Your Quilt World.” She will discuss new techniques in texture and dimension. Swift also will share many of her creations as a Trunk Show. Swift will teach a workshop featuring the “Creative Tuck Method” wall-hanging Saturday at the same location. The cost for the class is $30.

Native Roots explores small-space garden
Native Roots Garden Center will host a free class on the new Tower Garden Aeroponic system for home gardeners at noon Saturday at 26266 U.S. Highway 160.
Participants will learn about the future of small-space gardening that minimizes water use and maximizes production. This is a hydroponic system that anyone can set up and use. The class will last approximately one hour.

Thrive! group to host Ben & Jerry’s chair
La Plata County Thrive! Living Wage Coalition will host these programs Wednesday:
“The Ben & Jerry’s Story: 35-year struggle to maintain its soul” will feature guest speaker Jeff Furman, chair of the Board of Trustees of Ben & Jerry’s, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Room 130 of Nobel Hall at Fort Lewis College. Turkey Springs plans prescribed burn
The Pagosa Ranger District is planning a prescribed burn Thursday in the Turkey Springs area.
Operations are expected to take place from about noon through mid-afternoon Thursday for optimum smoke dispersal. Cooler temperatures and lower wind speeds are expected for Thursday and will provide optimal prescribed burning conditions.
The prescribed burn unit is located along Forest Service Road No. 629 (Turkey Springs). The unit is 88 acres in size and contains needles and some light thinning slash from a previous hazardous fuels treatment. Smoke is expected to be minimal but may settle down drainage in Devil Creek toward Aspen Springs overnight.
Over the next 2-3 weeks, additional prescribed burning may occur in the Turkey Springs area if another prescribed burn window presents itself. Signs will be posted on Piedra Road and U.S. Highway 160 to alert travelers, but no visibility concerns are expected.
