St. Onge’s Mt. Everest to be seen in slides

Mancos Public Library, 211 E. First St., will host Rick St. Onge’s slideshow presentation of an expedition to Mount Everest at 6 p.m. Friday.

With stunning images and personal accounts from the expedition, St. Onge will guide people along his journey. He and an American Team sponsored by the American Alpine Club embarked on this expedition to Mount Everest in 1991. His climbing experience includes seven expeditions in the Himalayas with successful summits of Himalchuli (26,000), Island Peak (29,300), Lantang, Yala 1 and Yala2. He also has climbed mountains in Africa, South America, Scotland, Alaska, Pakistan and the United States. In addition to mountaineering, he competed in kayaking, canoeing and sailing.

Colo. author to make his local rounds

Craig Childs, a western Colorado author who writes about people, animals and the outdoors, will make a couple of appearances Saturday in Durango:

Childs will present the keynote address at the annual La Plata Democrats Jefferson Jackson Dinner and Auction at 5:30 p.m. at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave. Childs will speak on “The Source of All Waters: A River Journey to Tibet and Back.” Tickets are available at www.laplatadems.org.

Childs will read from and sign his latest book Apocalyptic Planet from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Rochester Hotel, 726 East Second Ave.

Go Around the World Saturday in Durango

Durango Education Center will host the sixth annual Around the World Multicultural Fair from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The fair will highlight the culturally diverse population served at the center and that live in La Plata County. The fair will offer hands-on activities, crafts, food and entertainment for the entire family. Attendees will be given their own passport to visit more than 12 different countries and learn specific information about them.
