Jayden Peacock goes up for a shot earlier this year. The senior averaged 8.3 points per game during the season and ranks as one of Mancos High School's top students.

Stepping into the halls of Mancos High School four years ago, Jayden Peacock hoped that his next four years would be defined by memorable successes and outstanding accomplishments.

Even in his wildest dreams however, the soon-to-be graduate probably didn't anticipate just how special his time as a student athlete in Mancos would be.

Standout basketball player

To appreciate Peacock's accomplishments, it is helpful to start by examining his achievements on the basketball court where he grew into an invaluable contributor to the Mancos High School team.

Peacock began his freshman season with high hopes after honing his skills for countless hours during the previous summer, but broke his arm early in the season and was forced to watch the majority of his team's games from the bench..

After rehabbing his arm and returning for his sophomore season, Peacock again found himself on the outside looking in after failing to earn consistent playing time.

"A lot of my basketball career has had its ups and downs," Peacock said. "Between my broken arm and coaching changes during my first two years, things got off to a rough start."

Peacock finally cracked the varsity lineup as a junior season flourished during his first-year in head coach Rodney Cox's defense-oriented system, averaging 5.8 points per game and often shutting down his opponent's top player.

"I tried to bring defense every single game no matter if I was on with my shot or not," said Peacock. "I tried to bring heart and fire to the court because that was something I could do no matter how well I was doing on offense."

In his senior season, Peaock averaged 8.3 points per game and consistently brought the home crowd to its feet with gutsy defensive plays and timely shooting. Partially as a result of Peacock's contributions, the Bluejays advanced to the Regional finals for the first time in several years.

"I played basketball with those guys my entire life and it was awesome to have such great chemistry with the seniors and juniors," said Peacock. "Being able to play basketball with my teammates was the greatest experience of my life thus far."

Developing track athlete

After focusing his athletic energies on basketball during the majority of his first four years of high school, Peacock decided to join the Mancos track team for his final high school season.

Just two meets into his high school career, Peacock placed in the top-five in the high jump and cracked the top-20 in the 200-meter dash.

"I tried my hand at jumping and I feel like there is a lot of room for improvement," said Peacock. "I'll also be competing in some sprinting events. Even though I'm not the quickest, I know that I can keep improving."

Stellar academic achiever

As impressive as Peacock's athletic accomplishments have been, his most notable achievements have come in the classroom, where he carries a 4.1 GPA.

Already accepted to the University of Colorado in Boulder, Peacock said that he plans to complete undergraduate degree before applying to medical school in hopes of becoming an anesthesiologist.

Regardless of the heights that his life might reach however, Peacock said that he will never forget his time as a student-athlete in Mancos due to the close-knit nature of the local community.

"Seeing the kinds of actions that the community takes to rally around our players, that's the thing that I'll remember most," Peacock said. "We all love each other and support each other."
