Eli Tomac stands on the podium after finishing first in the 12th round of the AMA Supercross Series in Detroit on March 21.

For weeks, Eli Tomac has been waiting for things to click, and on March 21, everything finally did as the GEICO Honda racer captured first place in the 12th round of the AMA Supercross Series in Detroit on March 21.

Tomac’s victory in the Supercross Series’ premiere 450cc division marked the Cortez native’s first since he crossed the line first in Phoenix on Jan. 10.

“(This win) has been a long time coming,” said Tomac in a GEICO Motorcycle press release. “It was just a day that was clicking for me from the beginning. Ten rounds is a long time between wins when you want something so bad and it’s nice to get it.”

To capture the victory, Tomac passed series’ points leader Ryan Dungey on the race’s fifth lap before pulling away for an 11 second victory. Highlighting Tomac’s win was a massive jump traversing the entire length of the course’s quad jumps.

“I never did it in practice, so it was something that I had to pull during the night show,” said Tomac. “We saw Weston Peick do it in practice, and when you see a guy do it, you’re like, ‘Hey, I can go bust that thing, too.’”

Currently third in the series’ points standings behind Trey Canard and Ryan Dungey, Tomac will look to improve his position in St. Louis on March 28 when riders compete in the 13th round of the series.
