Prior to a teeing off for a practice round on March 11, Kiselya Plewe said that she could win state this season.

Then the Montezuma-Cortez High School junior lent credence to her claim with first-place finishes in Grand Junction on March 16 and Montrose on March 17.

Plewe shot an 18-hole score of 76 in Grand Junction and 73 in Montrose.

“Kiselya had a great two days and ground when she had to,” said Dolores High School golf coach Jeff Carr. “She was getting some weird bounces and some bad breaks, but she was able to follow up problem holes with good holes.”

As a team, Dolores High School finished third out of four teams in Grand Junction and ninth out of 12 teams in Montrose.

M-CHS junior Keyana Matteson put together two of the best rounds of her high school career, shooting a score of 107 in Grand Junction and a score 102 in Montrose.

“Keyana drove the ball very solid both days,” said Carr. “She was very accurate, and she made some really good putts when she had to. Her attitude was also really good.”

Rounding out the Lady Bears lineup was Dolores High School sophomore Harlie Valdez, who shot a 140 in Grand Junction and a 150 in Montrose. Prior to this season, Valdez had never played in a high school golf tournament.

“I was very proud of Harlie,” said Carr. “The tournament in Grand Junction marked her first 18 holes of tournament golf ever. “To see her go out on the course and keep her composure and put good swings on the ball was great.”

Next up for the Dolores girls’ golf team will be a tournament at Black Canyon Golf Club in Montrose on March 23 and a tournament at Bridges Golf Club on March 24.

“We had really good finishes in our first two tournaments and next week, we should have our full team,” said Carr. “I’m expecting really solid finishes from all of the girls.”
