Competing at home against Durango High School on March 17, Montezuma-Cortez High School’s No. 2 singles player Skye Cole hammered several powerful serves past her surprised opponent.

While in the end, Cole’s hard-serving was not enough to earn her a victory, the M-CHS junior enjoyed plenty of wins on the court and in the classroom during the last several years.

A three-year varsity tennis player, Cole began her high school career as part of the Lady Panthers No. 4 doubles team, before ascending to No. 1 doubles as a sophomore No. 2 singles this season.

While Cole admitted that she is sometimes competitive, she said that the camaraderie shares with teammates is what keeps her coming back to the court.

“I enjoy the girls, the trips and the sport of tennis in general,” Cole said. “My approach this season is to stay mentally strong. As a team, I hope that we build really nice friendships.”

In addition to playing tennis, Cole been a member of M-CHS’s state-qualifying cheerleading team during her sophomore and junior years. She has also been involved in the school’s youth leadership council and serves as the junior class president in M-CHS’s student government.

When not playing sports and participating in other extra-curricular activities, Cole enjoys studying for math classes, including pre-calculus, trigonometry and statistics.

While she remains undecided as to what future career she may pursue, Cole said she would like to attend college in the south. Asked what she enjoys most about being a student at M-CHS, the junior said that good friends and helpful teachers have combined to make her experience special.

“I love to represent my school, be a student athlete and be a Panther,” Cole said.
