The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is seeking volunteer docents to provide one-hour tours to campus visitors.
Crow Canyon is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to understanding and teaching the rich history of the ancestral Pueblo Indians who inhabited the canyons and mesas of the Mesa Verde region more than 700 years ago. It is located northwest of Cortez.
The tour will include Crow Canyon’s archaeology laboratory, the Pithouse Learning Center (a replica of a seventh-century Pueblo Indian dwelling), and the Pueblo Farming Project’s demonstration gardens.
Docents must be articulate, friendly and comfortable speaking to a group. They must be able to follow a detailed tour outline and lead campus walks up to one mile long. Previous experience as a museum docent, knowledge of southwestern archaeology, and a college degree are desirable.
A commitment of at least four hours per month (two hours per day, twice a month, during the morning) from May through October is required, plus half a day of initial training and a minimum of four hours of additional training during the season.
