The Dolores School District will host interviews Friday for the Dolores Elementary principal position. Superintendent Scott Cooper said he is hopeful the interview committee selects at least two candidates from the first round of interviews to invite to the elementary school the following week.

Sherri Maxwell is retiring this year.

Finalists from the Friday interviews will be invited to mingle at the Dolores Elementary on March 17 and 18 from 3:35 to 5 p.m. One or more will be invited, so if you want to meet all the finalists, participate in both.

Free books

"I once worked with a superintendent whose motto was 'Life is a reading test,' and I agree," said Dolores Elementary School Principal Sherri Maxwell.

Strong reading skills are necessary for almost every job and career path. Just ask anyone who has taken the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.

Dolores Elementary School uses the Accelerated Reader program for students in the second through fifth grades to add fun competition to reading, and they apply for a grant from the Kinder Morgan Foundation to encourage students to read over the summer.

Maxwell recently announced another program to support students. Brad Finch is administering a tutoring grant to about 30 students enrolled in the program.

As part of the grant, Finch has provided free books to give to students and parents. A book rack is set up in the front entry of the school.

"We are hoping to operate this as a 'Need a book, take a book, have a book, share the book' basis. Feel free to help yourself to a book. Once you've finished reading it, return it and get a new one. We will also take donations of gently used books you may have laying around. Happy reading!" Maxwell said.
