Cortez resident Margaret Potter celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday in style, getting pampered for the day by Southwest Colorado Community College cosmetology students.

The students, who visit to Vista Grande Inn every week to do hair and nails for residents, made Potter “Queen for the Day,” donning her in a pink tiara doing her hair and nails. Student Christina Knapp gave her a special cupcake manicure, using a teal green color that Potter picked out.

“It’s a real honor,” Potter said, when asked about getting pampered on her special day. Later in the day, Potter’s large family surprised her with a birthday cake.

Potter, a Southern California native who moved to Cortez in the 1950s, has five children, seven grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

“She’s lived through the horse and buggy to Mars and beyond,” said her son, Jerry.
