The Cortez Journal won four awards last month in the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest held in Denver.

Journal photographer Sam Green was awarded second place for a photo depicting a mule train crossing a meadow on the Calico Trail in June 2014. Green won third place in the Feature category for his image of a pig chase at the Dove Creek Pick ’n’ Hoe celebration in July.

Green was awarded second place in the Sports Photo category for his image of Cortez Ranch Rodeo contestant Jake Gordanier in August.

Reporter Tobie Baker was awarded second place for the headline “Fan betting an arm (but not a leg) on the Super Bowl,” which was published with his story about Andy Sanchez Jr., who tattoed a Broncos logo on his arm in January to show team spirit.

The contest encompassed work printed in Colorado’s Associated Press member newspapers from Sept. 1, 2013, through Aug. 31, 2014.

Awards were presented in three divisions: Division I for circulation 15,000 and under; Division II for circulation between 15,001 and 30,000; and Division III for circulation over 30,000.

The Cortez Journal and Durango Herald Journal were among the Division I newspapers.
