Wednesday, Feb. 18

9:15 a.m. Two people were issued summons for consuming alcohol in the Cortez City Park after an officer witnessed them drinking Taaka Vodka.

Thursday, Feb. 19

7:49 p.m. A man was arrested after he reportedly stuffed food from the frozen food section at Walmart inside a backpack. The man took off and dropped the backpack when confronted. When the officer located the man he said he was having a hard time finding work and was hungry. The man was issued a shoplifting summons and taken to jail. A total value of $19.07 in items were recovered, which could be resold.

9:12 p.m. A woman was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving after an officer observed her weaving near West 7th Street. The officer stopped to talk to the woman after she parked in the Walmart parking lot. The officer asked the woman why she was driving that way and she said it was because she was being followed by an officer. While looking for her license and registration, the woman got on her cell phone and started having a conversation with another woman. The officer could hear the woman on the phone ask, “Have you been drinking?” and the driver said, “Yes.” She was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Friday, Feb. 20

3:00 p.m. A bike was reported stolen from the front of the Cortez Public Library. The bike’s owner had gone into the library to return books and when he came out his 20-inch BMX bike was gone.

Saturday, Feb. 21

12:08 a.m. Officers stopped at Angel’s End Zone to conduct a bar check and could smell the odor of burning marijuana. When the officers walked to the north side of the bar, they found a woman holding what was suspected to be a marijuana cigarette. The woman told the officer that she had a Medical Marijuana card and the officer explained that it was still illegal to smoke marijuana in public. She was issued a summons for possession of less than two ounces of marijuana.

Monday, Feb. 23

12:16 p.m. An officer was dispatched to the 400 block of Elm Street for a report of a tree limb falling on a vehicle. A branch caused a dent the size of a silver dollar on the vehicle, photographs were taken.

6:18 p.m. A man was arrested for first degree assault after another man was admitted to Southwest Memorial Hospital with stab wounds. The injured man had a knife wound on his leg and upper lip.

7:49 p.m. A man was arrested at the Bridge Shelter after a flashlight that reportedly belonged to him was determined to have a white residue inside the bulb area that tested positive for methamphetamine. The man denied ownership of the flashlight but it was determined that the man had warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and left in the care and custody of the jail staff.
