While the storm early last week brought on a snow day last Monday, Feb. 23, more snow over the weekend cancelled a middle school dance and a ski trip. But by this Monday, March 2, most of the snow melted and Dolores students were back at school.

Another light dusting greeted drivers early Wednesday morning.

Upcoming PARCC assessments

There is a bit of apprehension about the new PARCC assessments that will be given to students in Dolores starting March 16. There will be a parent meeting about PARCC for parents of students in grades 3 through 5, Tuesday, March 10 at 5 p.m. at the Dolores Elementary School. This meeting should help ease some of the anxiety. If you can't make the meeting, Dolores Elementary Principal Sherri Maxwell encourages you to call her with questions at 882-4688.

Testing sessions are expected to last about 75 minutes each. Students in grades 3 to 5 will have three sessions of language arts testing and two sessions of math before spring break.

There will be a sample test to look at during this meeting.

The big move

Dolores Elementary School is planning for the big move. Next year the sixth grade will be part of the elementary school. A parent meeting is planned to discuss this move on March 11 at 5 p.m.

This meeting will help inform families about the progress school administration has made with the sixth grade move back to the elementary school. They will discuss possible schedules, programs and a leadership camp in the fall.

"Next year brings about a big change for our elementary school. It is the first year that the sixth grade will be a part of the elementary school instead of the middle school. We are excited to keep our students for one more year of fun and learning with your children," Maxwell said.

The fifth and sixth grade teams have been very busy planning how to make this experience special for students.

Parents are encouraged share their thoughts and ideas in return at this meeting.

Family support

The Alphabet Soup family support group invites all parents, caretakers or guardians of children with special needs to attend its monthly meeting on the first Thursday of the month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Piñon Project Annex Conference Room at N. Chestnut and Arbecam in Cortez.

For more information, contact Maggie at the Piñon Project 970-564-1195, ext. 229. Child care can be provided, but you must contact Maggie to make arrangements.

No school Fridays

There will staff work days on Friday March 6 and Friday, March 20. There is no school for students.
