In regards to the column by Leigh Waggoner (Journal, Feb. 20) and her use of the phrase “the mentally ill”: It is widely reported that we are generic. I puzzle at the claim. One day someone may explain it to me. I trace it in the daily news. It is very popular.

I am certain she does not believe the phrase, but employs it out of long habit.

Like “the” Jews, and “the” Blacks we are a diverse demographic, earning to the millions, holding every university degree, and every professional, white- and blue-collar job, and of course, none of the above.

But she knew that, it is her words that do not, and they are her tools.
