Don't miss the event of the year next week at the Dolores High School. The Annual DSLCS Talent Show will be Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. inside the Dolores High School Gymnasium. Tickets cost $5, and the DSLCS, which stands for Dolores Students in Leadership and Community Service, give the money back to local nonprofits.

It is always fun to see the hidden talents our students offer.

Highlights in the past seven years of the show have been Wyatt Wade solving about four or five Rubik's cubes in less than two minutes. Impressive. I haven't been able to solve one in the 30-something years. .

Students have shown off incredible piano skills, singing skills and dancing skills. Some have even shared their comic skills, and one time, I remember, a balancing skill.

This year also promises to be great with a mixture of acts including dancers, singers, instrument players and improv acts.

Doors usually open about a half-hour early.

Food drive

Students at the Dolores schools are participating in a Five Days of Love Food Drive in partnership with the Piñon Project. The drive will run through Feb. 27. The classroom that collects the most food will get an extra recess. And we all remember how important recess is, especially now that there are snow forts to build.

The top three classrooms that bring the most food will receive spirit sticks.

Suggested donations are soups, canned chicken or canned beef, microwavable sides, 90-second rice/noodles, mashed potatoes that only require water, canned fruit in light syrup and breakfast items such as oatmeal, jelly, peanut butter, small boxes of cereal, dry milk and boxed dinners.

All the food collected in the drive will be used in the backpack program, which started this year. A backpack of food is sent home for the weekend with families experiencing tough times.

McDonald's fun

McDonald's in Cortez was taken over by Dolores teachers last week as the local fast-food restaurant joined forces with the PTA to help raise money for the school.

The event, I am told, was a success, and quite a bit of money was raised by the PTA to help buy classroom computers.

I am also told the teachers had fun, serving up food to local students and their families.

The school was given a lump sum figure and 15 percent of the sales that night.
