Ah, the supermarket.

For many of us, the chore of shopping for groceries can be overwhelming. When you add keeping within a budget and keeping things you put into your cart good for you, the task can seem impossible.

But on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. at the Safeway grocery store in Cortez, Laura White, a registered dietitian nutritionist with Southwest Memorial Hospital, will show how to make healthy choices at the supermarket while staying on budget.

“Consumers can really use this to help their family eat healthy on a budget,” said Lisa Smith, also a registered dietitian nutritionist with Southwest Memorial Hospital.

“We will teach you how to scope the supermarket,” Smith said. “It’s really important because the healthiest foods are on the perimeter of the store.”

Questions will be answered on the tour about buying fresh, frozen, canned or bulk food.

“We will walk around the entire supermarket,” she said. “I would imagine anybody can learn from this tour.”

Eating on a budget is a big focus of the tour.

“Some people think they can’t eat healthy because they don’t make enough money,” Smith said. “It’s important to be an informed consumer.”

Space is limited on the tour, so call 564-2276 to make a reservation. Another tour is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10.
