Saleea Lepray, Christian Newell and Kari Marzella are ready to serve customers at the Medicine Man that opened for retail sales Thursday.

Main Street marijuana shop Medicine Man has officially branched out into main stream recreational sales.

Owner Sherry Garcia confirmed that the shop opened for recreational sales to customers 21 and over on Thursday Feb. 12, and that she and her staff are looking forward to this new chapter of the business.

Medicine Man’s retail permit was one of two approved conditionally at the Feb. 10 meeting of the Cortez City Council, provided that the shop obtains a certificate of occupancy.

“We opened at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, as soon as we got the hard copy of the C.O. (Certificate of Occupancy),” said Garcia. “It’s about time. We’ve been down a year-and-half, and we’re ready to get back on top.”

Recreational inventory includes 16 strains of marijuana and “many, many edibles” ranging in dosages from 5 to 100 milligrams, she said.

After-hours security at the shop remains high following an early-morning break-in on Feb. 3. Two unknown male suspects reportedly stole “quite a bit” of marijuana from the bud room around 5 a.m., according to a police report filed that day.

Garcia says the shop has 26 cameras throughout the interior and exterior. The suspects involved in the break-in were caught on camera and positively identified by employees, she said.

With the incident behind them and the new recreational side of the business fully operational, Garcia says she and the staff want to focus on the now. And right now, Medicine Man’s debut has enjoyed a strong start.

“The way business has been the first two days, we might be hiring three more budtenders, she said.

Medicine Man is located at 310 E. Main St., in Cortez.
