Wet weather coming, ending stretch of record highs

It’s shaping up to be a soggy weekend in Montezuma County, nothing like the sunny and record-setting warm weather last weekend.

Unseasonably warm weather in Cortez on Sunday and Monday broke records, said meteorologist Jim Andrus. On Jan. 25, the mercury hit 60 degrees, eclipsing the previous record of 58 set on Jan. 25, 1958. On Jan. 26, Cortez was a balmy 61 degrees, beating the previous record 58 degrees on Jan. 26, 1951.

In Cortez on Thursday night, there’s a 60 percent chance of a mix of rain and snow before 10 p.m., with a low around 31.

Daytime rain and snow chances increase to 80 percent on Friday, tapering off to 70 percent at night, according to the NWS forecast. Daytime highs are expected to be near 44 tomorrow, with temperatures dropping to 29 at night. Saturday sees a 50 percent chance of rain and snow mix for most of the day, with a 20 percent chance of rain that evening.

Sunny skies and a high of 45 are forecasted for Sunday.

Dolores

The National Weather Service weekend forecast is similar for Dolores. Highs today are estimated to be 48 with a 10 percent chance of precipitation, which increases to 60 percent tonight.

Friday could bring light snow to Dolores before 8 a.m., the NWS says, then a 60 percent chance of rain for the rest of the day.

Saturday could bring snow before 11 a.m. Rain, however, is expected to be in the cards for the rest of the day, as the NWS is forecasting a 60 percent chance of precipitation with daytime highs around 42.

Saturday night, a 30 percent chance of snow before 11 p.m. is expected, with an overnight low of 21.

Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high around 43.

Mancos

In Mancos, there’s a slight chance of rain and snow late this afternoon, with a high near 46 and an overnight low of 29. Chance of rain increases to 60 percent.

On Friday, a daytime high near 40 and an overnight low of 27 is expected. Snow chances increase to 80 percent Friday night, with 1 to 2 inches possible.

Saturday in Mancos could bring snow before 11 a.m. then a chance of rain.

The NWS is forecasting a sunny Sunday with a high near 42.
