Cortez Fire responds to a chimney fire on U.S. 491 Thursday morning. It was quickly contained.

Crews from the Cortez Fire Protection District and the Dolores Fire Department responded to separate fires Thursday morning.

At a home on U.S. 491 near the intersection with County Road L, a wooden roof caught fire next to a hot chimney. An observant passerby called 911. When Cortez Fire crews arrived, flames were on the roof and they woke up a woman and her baby, who had been sleeping.

“They were unaware, so it’s very fortunate someone called it in,” said firefighter Alex Archuleta. The fire was quickly contained, and there were no injuries.

Meanwhile, on County Road P, a burn pile on a pasture got out of control, and the landowner alerted Dolores Fire, requesting assistance.

Dolores Fire tankers and engines responded and were able to contain the fire after it ran through dry vegetation for a good distance. There were no structures lost.
