Dolores Elementary has been awarded an early childhood grant from the Buell Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to help the elementary school build relationships with families prior to their child's entry into kindergarten.

The program is called Best Foot Forward and is looking for partners to help build this program from the ground up. If you are interested in community involvement, early childhood education or are parent of a preschool aged child, you could help with this new program.

For more information, go to an informational meeting on Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. at the Dolores School District Administration Building at 100 North 6th St.

Backpack program doing well

The Backpack Program is going well in Dolores. It is a grant program through Care and Share to supply meals to families in need for the weekends. Kelly Procter, of the Piñon Project, has done an amazing job raising food and money to be able to support a few of our families already. The school also paired with our PTA and did a food drive at the Elementary in November, and another one is coming in February.

The Dolores Southern Baptist Church is allowing the school to use its facility for storage and for packing up the backpacks each week.

Knowledge bowl teams rock

The Dolores High School and Dolores Middle School Knowledge Bowl teams had nice showings recently. Both teams received first-place awards in the Dove Creek Knowledge Bowl this week. Way to go!

Mark your calendars

The Dolores Student Leaders in Community Service Talent Show will be March 5 this year, so mark your calendar.

This will be the 7th Annual DSLCS Talent Show. Proceeds from the show go to local non-profit organizations in Montezuma County.

Citrus Bowl appearance

Dolores High School student Savannah Madden was lucky enough to perform at the Citrus Bowl in Florida earlier this month. She was recognized after the cheer and dance state competition as an All American, which qualified her to perform at the show. She did perform at the show, but I am told by those that were watching, that the cameras cut away at the wrong time.

But it was still a great experience for Madden.
