My mother wanted to live to the year 2000 because she wanted to say to a few people that "See, Jesus didn't come nor was it a time of dire predictions." Sadly, she lacked two years of living to the year 2000.

Janey Silver, Mancos Band Director, has spent over half of her life with children in the Mancos community. She will retire at the end of this school year.

The recall of Jim Verghis, town trustee, failed because no petitions were filed by Dec. 10.

Senior Appreciation Night will be the focus of the Mancos Blue Jay Band concert Monday evening. The seniors being honored are:

Cody Eubanks, Tiffany Young, Shaun Roberts, Rene Davis, Erica Russell, Abby Hutchinson, Melissa Keller, Randee Reider, and Jared Whitehead.

Cara and Casey Hill are making Mancos proud. The sisters, daughters of Gary and Glenda Hill, are starting this season with the Fort Lewis college Women's basketball team.

In Marie Hennrich's "Friends and Neighbors" column: Doug Wyman and daughter Randy spent Christmas break in Tyler, Texas. Hope Isabella Morelli joined the family of Mike and Haleigh Morelli on Dec. 21. Clyde and Irene Sheek hosted seven of their eight grandchildren at a grandchildren-only party on Dec. 28.

Al and Anne Martin had children Lori Miller and Amanda Burleson and families home for Thanksgiving. Matthew, Abram and Joshua and their families were home for Christmas.

Jack and Mary Ann Ott celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve. The Otts have seven children and 13 grandchildren.

A rather long and detailed obituary of Howard Norman Whipple appeared. He was born on June 9, 1930 and passed away on December 6, 1999. On June 17, 1950 he married Shirley Hanson. They were parents of seven daughters and four sons.

Earlier this year Howard moved to Paramount, he Senior Center was serving meatloaf, apple juice, boiled potatoes in jackets, calico coleslaw, roll and date-apricot bar.

An ad appeared for Custom Calligraphy and Frame - Beth Wheeler and Herb Folsom. Another ad also caught my eye: "Cellar Cuts- Kelli Yeomans."

The Mancos Senior Center hosted over 40 people at a special lunch on Dec. 29 to herald the arrival of the year 2000. Loretta Kieffer received a gift in appreciation of her services to the seniors and the center.

Illegal drug use among students of Mancos High is a growing problem.
