Standing 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing more than 200 pounds, Montezuma-Cortez High School student Elijah Lansing looks like an athlete.

During the 2014-15 football season, the senior played like an athlete as well, making 71 tackles and recovering three fumbles from his defensive end position and opening holes for M-CHS running backs as an offensive guard.

Thanks to his contributions on the field, Lansing earned all-conference honorable mention honors for the first time in his four-year career.

“When I came in as a freshman, I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said Lansing. “I played on the “B Team” all through middle school and high school football was a lot faster than I expected. “I started working my way up and this year, I made an impact.”

After helping the M-CHS football team to its best finish since 1957, Lansing decided to go out for wrestling this year. According to M-CHS head coach Shad Bellmire, the senior could make an impact in the 195-pound division.

“I just want to go out, do my best and see how far I can go,” said Lansing. “This will be my first year of high school wrestling, but I wrestled in fourth grade and seventh grade.”

Once the wrestling season concludes, Lansing plans to compete in baseball as a catcher and throw for the M-CHS track team.

Among Lansing’s favorite classes is Bodybuilding, which the senior said has been vital to his athletic success.

“You can do what you want and make yourself a better athlete,” said Lansing.

Upon graduating from high school in May of 2015, Lansing plans to enroll in the United State Marines as a mechanic. Between now and then, the senior said that he hopes to enjoy his final months of high school and positively impact his teams.
